The DuBose Transformation
My physical transformation came as a result of many things. However, I believe the following sums up how it all occurred.
For the past 22-plus years working as a Master Firefighter/Paramedic, I recognized the importance of physical fitness. Although I had planned to become physically fit many times before, those plans always fell short of my goal and landed to the wayside. However, I never truly saw my plans for fitness more than “exercise”. But this time for some apparent reason, the plan for being more fit became a lifestyle! I began this so-called transformation strictly by accident on June 27, 2021. At the time I weighed a hearty 238 pounds. I was tired most of the time and had very little energy to do a lot of things. However, after nearly 7 months of intense physical activity and weight training at the Planet Fitness facility in Lynchburg, Virginia I have lost nearly 30 pounds. As of January 1, 2022, I currently weighed 208 pounds!
Although my life as I once knew it, was rapidly changing before my very eyes, I wanted to take it by the horns, ultimately taking control of my life, and my personal fitness. I was getting older, (as of February 6, 2023, I turned 56 years old) and the younger employees were making awesome impacts in the fire service. I was now becoming the ‘ole guy’. The motivation for me to make this healthy lifestyle came mostly from within myself. I will say however, that this lifestyle change was something that I wanted to do for myself and for no one else. The amount of self-motivation I initially had when I began has since overflowed immensely. I have seen the results of my efforts and the sacrifices I’m making which makes me realize that I can accomplish anything when I set my mind to it.
For me to embark on this lifestyle, I had to use my motivation in developing a plan that was just right for me. I researched, studied, and discussed with others about what worked for them, and what did not. So, I finally created my own plan and got busy moving forward with it. To lose the weight my workout regimen consist of four to six days of working out each week. My workout duration lasts anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours in length. The regimen consists of a daily 10-mile stationary cycle for 30 minutes, then I would use a 30-minute circuit training format working various body parts, which Planet Fitness had previously established. Lastly, the final 30 to 60 minutes would include weight training. Incredibly enough with every workout session, I would burn off anywhere from 450 to 800 calories depending on the intensity of the session.
While I knew I was making some progress in the right direction, I did not truly see it until several people in the department and at Planet Fitness started speaking about. Once I took a recent picture, January 1. 2022 and put it beside the picture from June 27. 2021, I realized I had made a considerable dent in the transformation I was looking for with my new lifestyle! It was at that moment that I realized I could positively impact others just as I had with myself, but I needed the skills, knowledge, and certifications to do so for others.
